About
Chloë McCardel (Australian) is a Melbourne-raised Sydneysider who holds multiple marathon swimming World Records. Chloë McCardel is pushing the boundaries of marathon swimming and what the human mind and body can achieve. Described as the greatest ultra-marathon swimmer in history, an inspiration and role model, Chloë aims to achieve the impossible.
She is also a swim coach (having coached over 150 people to swim the English Channel), international keynote speaker and advocate on behalf of domestic violence victims.
On October 13th 2021 Chloë broke the World Record for Greatest Crossings, previously held by British swimmer Alison Streeter MBE, who completed the crossing 43 times. Chloë ‘s 44x English Channel swims include 35x single, 3x double and a triple non-stop crossing (Australian Record) and the longest non-stop ocean swim (124km, 42hrs).
She has been recognised by the International Swimming Hall of Fame, (ISHOF), International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame (IMSHOF), Marathon Swimmers Federation (MSF) and the Channel Swimming Association (CSA) for her outstanding achievements. Chloë was also a joint-winner of Marie Clare’s 2020 ‘Women of the Year’ for her record breaking 35th Channel swim and advocacy work.
Chloë has used her extensive marathon experience to provide high quality, specialised swim coaching to her swimmers. She has coached and coordinated over 150 people, from the ages of 15 – 60 years, from across the globe, to swim the English Channel in relays and solos. She has recently launched World First Relays between England to Belgium in July 2022, a distance of 92km across the cold and rough North Sea.
She has been coaching English Channel swimmers since 2013. One of her swimmers, Rick Seirer, a farmer from country Victoria, became the oldest person in history to swim a double non-stop crossing (68kms) in 2019. He took 30hrs to make the 68km journey in circa 16C water.
The 36-year-old elite athlete said: “I am so honoured to be setting off knowing that I am doing this for a bigger cause than myself. I’m hoping I can make friends and family proud, that my story will inspire others to never give up and that we CAN overcome extreme hurdles that life throws at us.
“I’m also sending my thoughts out to everyone impacted by the COVID pandemic, especially those who have been or are currently trapped in their homes, sometimes in extremely challenging environments, especially those who are experiencing domestic violence.
“Many might think that what I do needs superhuman strength but at one point in my life I was very vulnerable and suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD). Endurance training has helped me through those challenging periods in my life. I hope my efforts will inspire others – whoever they are and whatever their circumstances – to stay strong and resilient in these difficult times.”
Achievements
I’ve pushed myself as much as I thought I could have. Now, it’s about pushing the boundaries of marathon swimming. It’s about pushing the human spirit. Maybe we can go further.
