The East Goodwin Lightvessel marks the Goodwin Sands, a treacherous stretch of water on the East Coast. This lightship swim is 13km back from the lightship to England.
More than 2000 ships are believed to have been wrecked upon the Goodwin Sands. Several Naval battles have been fought nearby, including the battles of the Goodwin Sands, in 1602 and 1652, and the battle of Dover Straight in 1917.
